Since 2015, Safe Community Wood Buffalo has hosted the We Love the Winters Here event with the support of Suncor Energy & the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. This Canadian newcomer event is in collaboration with many local organizations & agencies including Francophonie Albertaine Plurielle (FRAP), the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo & the YMCA of Northern Alberta-Wood Buffalo. Speakers present on topics such as, How to Dress for Winter (Councillor Phil Meagher of the Ptarmigan Nordic Ski Club), Furnace Maintenance (ATCO Gas), Emergency Preparedness (Emergency Management), Winter Driving Safety Tips (RCMP) & Flu Season Health (Alberta Health Services).
Participants enjoy a free meal while given the opportunity to browse information tables of local organizations with resources available such as child programs & activities, English language classes & financial helps. This family friendly event includes activities for children & many exciting giveaways! It is a fun, engaging opportunity to welcome our Wood Buffalo newcomers & ensure they learn winter safety tips to better prepare them for our northern, Alberta winter season. It is also exciting to listen to first winter experiences, of which you will find two such accounts in the printable Winter Safety Booklet.
This past year the event was hosted online via Zoom & did see great success. Watch for upcoming details of We Love the Winters Here 2021!
