Prevention of Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth
Impaired & distracted driving are two MAJOR causes of road crashes in Canada today. The PARTY Program looks to end this trend! The program is conducted with our local grade 9 students who at age 14 are on the verge of becoming new drivers on our roadways.
The full day program is comprsed of a mock collsion with volunteer actors, the students standby as spectators of an horrific crash that our Regional Emergency Serivces are responding to. Following the crash the students listen to the stories of first responders, medical personnel, and a road crash victim or victim's family member. They get to see and hear the perspectives of all the consequences of a road crash.
They learn that it is not just an article that hits the daily newspapers and media as a one time event, it is an event where the trauma can last a lifetime and the impact affects many.
They are provided activities that help them understand what life would could be like to attend rehab for a serious injury, how easy one can be distracted when driving and how alcohol and drugs can affect your brain.
PARTY Program is high impact! Students we meet who have been a part of the program years ago remember the lessons they learned on that day. Over 700 students participated in last year's program and this year we are ready to go with an expectation of close to 900.
