SMARTRISK

Date:    March 08, 2011

On March 8, 2011 the Childhood Injury Prevention Committee hosted SMARTRISK No Regrets Live to over 600 grade 8 students who were empowered to live life by making smart choices and taking smart risks. The show included fast-paced video clips of youth as well as a live talk by an injury survivor who spoke candidly about how an injury has affected his life and where he now draws his Stupid Line.

The Stupid Line is the line of choice or continuum that separates a smart risk from a stupid risk. We each have a stupid line. Where we draw it is different for each person and changes depending on current conditions, experience and the environment. Sometimes you can cross your stupid line and someone else gets hurt. Students were asked: Where do they draw their stupid line?

In addition, 2007 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, Colin Angus , spoke to schools and the community about his many adventures including rafting the Amazon and the first human-powered circumnavigation of the planet. Colin credits his achievements and success on planning for risk.

Over the course of the day, over 1100 people learned about adventure, smart risks and where to draw their Stupid Line.

After the event, students & community members indicated in their surveys that in relation to SMARTRISK’s 5 core messages:

  • 81% are more likely to buckle up
  • 71% are more likely to get trained
  • 81% are more likely to look first
  • 78% are more likely to wear the gear
  • 85% are more likely to drive sober
