Throughout 2018 child passenger safety awareness has heightened within the Wood Buffalo region as local Child Passenger Safety Technicians along with Safe Community Wood Buffalo, Child Development Day Homes, the Hub Family Resource Centre, RCMP and Regional Emergency Services have been working diligently through Buckle Up Wood Buffalo. Beginning January 1st 2018, many CPST's (Child Passenger Safety Technicians) kept a log of their inspections. Keeping track of the child's age, orientation of the car seat, whether the seat was correct on arrival and how many adjustments were needed. 244 inspections were recorded plus stats from check stops that were held in partnership with RCMP.
Some of the numbers might shock you and their publication is in no way is meant to cause you fear. It is hoped that by seeing some of these numbers it increases awareness surrounding the issue of child passenger safety, and in turn enables you to be mindful when installing and using your child safety seats.
It has been said that a properly used car seat can decrease the risk of death and injury by 74% and that using a booster seat can provide 60% more protection than just using the seat belt alone. Being that in Canada, motor vehicle collisions are still the number 1 cause of injury and death for our children, please help us share the importance of child passenger safety to our region and beyond!
